September kicks off with one of New Orleans’ biggest Labor Day weekend traditions: Southern Decadence.
What began as a small gathering among friends in 1972 has grown into a major annual celebration of the LGBTQ+ community. Today, Southern Decadence brings several days of parties, performances, drag shows, brunches, dancing, and community events to the French Quarter and venues throughout New Orleans.
The bulk of this year’s festivities take place September 3–7, 2026, culminating in the popular Southern Decadence parade on Sunday.
Whether you’re attending the parade or joining one of the many celebrations happening throughout the weekend, expect plenty of the energy and personality New Orleans is known for.

Looking for something a little more restorative? Spend part of Labor Day weekend focusing on movement, mindfulness, and wellness at the New Orleans Health and Yoga Festival.
Taking place September 3–6, the four-day experience features activities centered around yoga and wellness, including all-level yoga classes, guided meditation and sound healing.
It’s a great opportunity to slow down, recharge, and experience a different side of New Orleans.

Celebrate art, culture, and the life of legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo at the New Orleans Frida Fest & Hispanic Heritage Celebration on September 12. The event arrives just before the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, making it a colorful way to kick off the celebration in New Orleans.
Presented by Las Fridas Krewe and Studio Shakti, the first annual event invites community members to embrace the theme by dressing as their favorite Frida or Diego.
Visitors can also browse local food and art vendors while celebrating Hispanic culture, creativity, and community.
September is also a great month to escape the heat for a few hours and explore some history.
“American Revolution” at The Historic New Orleans Collection gives history lovers another cultural experience to add to their New Orleans itinerary. The exhibition is listed among the exhibitions available to visitors throughout September 2026.
Located in the French Quarter, The Historic New Orleans Collection also makes an easy addition to a day of exploring the neighborhood’s historic architecture, restaurants, shops, and attractions.

Music lovers and photography enthusiasts should make time for “Less Is More: The Photography of Steve Rapport” at the New Orleans Jazz Museum.
The exhibition opened April 21, 2026, and remains a current exhibition at the museum. It explores the work of photographer Steve Rapport, including images from his earlier career photographing major rock musicians and the work he has created since making New Orleans part of his story.
Rapport’s connection to New Orleans began unexpectedly. In March 2022, he traveled from California planning to spend only four days in the city. The trip ultimately led to a new chapter in his life and photography.
The exhibition offers visitors a chance to experience music history through Rapport’s distinctive photographic perspective, including images of iconic musicians such as David Bowie and Freddie Mercury, alongside his more recent New Orleans work.
You’ll find the exhibition at the New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Old U.S. Mint, 400 Esplanade Avenue, conveniently located near the French Quarter and Frenchmen Street.
Explore Less Is More: The Photography of Steve Rapport
You don’t have to wait until October to get into the Oktoberfest spirit.
On September 26, Urban South Brewery hosts its 10th annual Oktoberfest celebration, bringing together specialty beers, food, and entertainment for a festive Saturday at the brewery.
The milestone anniversary makes this year’s celebration an especially fun option for craft beer fans or groups looking for something casual to do as September comes to a close.
